Captured at the Ocean Grove Boat Ramp on the Bellarine Peninsula, this photograph is less about the pelican itself and more about the graphic structure of the scene around it.

I was drawn to the way the boat ramp creates a series of strong horizontal and vertical lines, almost like an architectural elevation, with the pelican perfectly framed within them. The flat perspective strips away the usual sense of depth, turning the water, structure, sky and bird into layers of colour, shape and line.

The combination of deep blues, soft water, warm evening light and the solitary silhouette of the pelican caught my eye immediately. It was one of those moments where an ordinary local scene suddenly became something much more graphic and unexpected.

I love that you can still recognise the boat ramp, but from this viewpoint it becomes almost abstract.
